Gnosis Chain — Fusaka Hard Fork Announcement

Gnosis Chain will activate the Fusaka hard fork at epoch 1714688, Tuesday, April 14, 2026 at 12:06:20 UTC.

Fusaka was activated on Ethereum mainnet in December 2025. While we usually try to deliver hardfork before Ethereum, this one in particular was delayed following the Balancer hack. It is primarily a data availability and execution-layer efficiency upgrade. The headline feature is PeerDAS (EIP-7594), which replaces full blob downloads with probabilistic data availability sampling, significantly reducing per-node bandwidth requirements while enabling sustainable increases in blob throughput over time.

Additional changes harden gas accounting, cap transaction and block size, add a new cryptographic precompile, and introduce a mechanism for adjusting blob parameters without requiring a hard fork.

This change is not backwards compatible. Nodes that do not upgrade will fork off of the network that decided to upgrade.

The Fusaka activation on Gnosis Chain is later than Ethereum mainnet due to the emergency Balancer hard fork executed in late 2025. Gnosis Core Devs conducted Fusaka testing on the Chiado testnet in early 2026 before scheduling mainnet activation.

Required Client Versions

Both your execution client and consensus client must be updated before Epoch 1714688.

Running an updated execution client with an outdated consensus client (or vice versa) is not sufficient. Both layers must be upgraded.

Nethermind and Lighthouse currently hold a majority client share on Gnosis Chain. If you are running either of them, you should strongly consider switching to a different client for safety of the network.

If you wish to go through with the upgrade, you need to complete your client upgrades before April 14, 2026 at 12:06:20 UTC.

Time (UTC): Tue Apr 14, 2026 — 12:06:20 UTC

Nodes running pre-fork client versions at this point will diverge from the canonical chain. You can upgrade at any time until the hard fork timestamp. If you don’t upgrade in time, you can still update your nodes after the hard fork to join the network again.

Key EIPs and what it changes

EIP-7594: Nodes verify blob data availability by sampling random fragments using erasure coding, rather than downloading full blobs. Reduces per-node bandwidth. Foundational step toward higher blob throughput on Gnosis Chain.
EIP-7892: Allows blob capacity parameters (target and max blobs per block) to be adjusted between hard forks via pre-scheduled coordination, without requiring a new named upgrade.
EIP-7825: Caps the gas a single transaction may consume at 16,777,216 gas (~16.78M). Prevents any individual transaction from monopolizing a full block as block gas limits rise.
EIP-7934: Introduces a hard 10 MiB ceiling on the RLP-encoded execution block. Closes a DoS surface where large but computationally inexpensive payloads could stress block propagation.
EIP-7918: Pins a proportional minimum price floor under blob fees. Prevents blob base fees from collapsing to near-zero during low-demand periods, preserving fee signal integrity.
EIP-7951: Adds native EVM support for the secp256r1 curve, enabling device-native signing via hardware security modules (HSMs) and FIDO2/WebAuthn. Relevant primarily for contract developers.
EIP-7939: Adds a Count Leading Zeros (CLZ) opcode to the EVM, improving efficiency of certain bitwise and cryptographic operations.
EIP-7823: Caps MODEXP precompile inputs at 8192 bits (1024 bytes). Inputs exceeding this limit are rejected and gas is consumed. Removes an extreme-case DoS vector and simplifies gas estimation.
EIP-7883: Revises the gas cost schedule for MODEXP to more accurately reflect actual computational cost. Works in conjunction with EIP-7823.
EIP-7917: Makes the Beacon Chain deterministically aware of the next epoch's proposer schedule. Enables future preconfirmation mechanisms. No direct operational change required at fork time.
EIP-7935: An informational EIP coordinating client teams to raise the default block gas limit toward ~60M. The new default is shipped in client releases; no manual configuration required.
EIP-7642: Formalises that clients must support partial pre-Merge history expiry. No immediate state change at fork activation.

Checklist for Operators

Identify your current execution and consensus client versions.
Update your execution client to the minimum required version.
Update your consensus client to the minimum required version.
Restart both clients and confirm peer discovery and slot progress are normal.
Monitor attestation performance and finalization in the first few epochs after activation (~10–15 minutes). Allow the network to reach a stable consensus before drawing conclusions about chain health.

No changes to validator keys, withdrawal credentials, or deposit configurations are required for this upgrade.

Latest updates before the Pectra Hard Fork

Today marks the day of the Pectra hard fork, and we wanted to share two updates with you that are not strictly mandatory but would be highly beneficial if implemented.

Lighthouse has released its latest client version today. This release focuses on state cache efficiency. While not extremely critical, updating is recommended. You can find the release link here: https://github.com/sigp/lighthouse/releases/tag/v7.0.1

The Erigon v2 to v3 upgrade requires a full resync. This process takes approximately 2 hours, so you might miss the hard fork. However, this resync is crucial to ensure your node operates correctly afterwards. Please update your Erigon package to the latest version and delete your old Erigon volumes. We're thrilled to announce the upcoming Pectra hard fork, a transformative upgrade that will significantly enhance the Gnosis Chain network. This comprehensive hard fork introduces crucial improvements to scalability, fee structures, and network functionality.

We strongly encourage all node runners to upgrade their nodes accordingly to ensure a smooth transition and maximize the benefits of the Pectra upgrade.

📌 Important note: Client teams will be published at the latest on April 23rd like Ethereum. All node runners have to upgrade their nodes before April 30, 2025. Please follow our communication channels to stay informed about this.

Differences with Ethereum mainnet

EIP-7691

The blob gas schedule is kept equal to the Dencun hard-fork.

EIP-4844-pectra

Extends the modified Gnosis EIP-4844 as defined in the dencun spec document. Starting at the fork timestamp, the blob base fee is collected instead of burned.

The actual blob_fee as calculated via calc_blob_fee is deducted from the sender balance before transaction execution and credited to the pre-defined address EIP4844_FEE_COLLECTOR as part of block processing. It is not refunded in case of transaction failure.

The Gnosis Chain Chiado testnet is scheduled for a hard fork on March 6, 2025, at 09:43:40 UTC (Slot 15171584, timestamp 1741254220). This upgrade, known as Pectra, brings significant improvements and requires immediate action from all Chiado node runners.

To ensure uninterrupted participation and fully benefit from the Pectra upgrade, please update your nodes to the compatible client versions listed below before the hard fork.

Nethermind Client v1.30.0 and Shutterized Transactions on Gnosis Chain

Shutter Network, a cutting-edge privacy solution leveraging threshold cryptography, is now officially supported in Nethermind 1.30.0. Initially enabled for a selected group of validators, it is now available for everyone. Shutter encrypts transactions in the mempool, keeping transaction details private until finalized on-chain. This ensures protection against frontrunning and supports fair and secure transaction execution on the Gnosis Chain.

Pectra Hardfork Updates

The Pectra hardfork is approaching step by step and our team continues preparations with client teams. We have briefly summarized below the key Pectra developments that stood out in the last core devs call. You can check the notes and recording for full context.

Ethereum Test Spec Implementation: The team is working on implementing Nethermind to run Ethereum tests for Gnosis. They are moving their efforts to Ethereum Spec tests to cover Petra testing.
Gnosis needs to implement Devnet 5 in line with Ethereum. The team does not need diverging branches and can support only the final Devnet 5 scope.
Gnosis needs to consider adjusting the blob-based fee fraction parameter for Petra as Ethereum. This parameter affects how blobs react to usage and pricing changes based on block fullness. The core devs team plans to discuss this internally and confirm with a team member, Lion, who was absent from the meeting.

The latest Gnosis Core Devs call centres on recent updates and ongoing challenges, including API improvements, bug fixes for the Petra release, peer-to-peer connectivity issues for the Shutter project, and upcoming Ethereum specification changes (EIP) requiring adjustments to Gnosis Chain.

Gnosis Chain Pectra Upgrade Specification

We are preparing for Pectra hard fork, and our core developers have released Pectra upgrade specifications on GitHub.

With EIP 7251 implementation, the maximum effective balance will increase from 1 GNO to 64 GNO per validator.

We’ll share more details about the included EIPs, specifications, and comprehensive guidelines for validator/node operators before the hard fork timeline as usual.

Node Bridge’s validator is live on Gnosis Chain

Gnosis Chain derives its strength and resilience from node operators geographically distributed across the world. The Africa-based Node Bridge community contributes to our network by activating their Gnosis Chain validator! We thank them and appreciate their contributions.

Geth on the Gnosis Chain

We have completed a full Geth synchronization and rebased the codebase to Geth version 1.14.12, creating a clean pull request that demonstrates successful block production and chain following on the Chiado network. A full resynchronization test is planned with these latest updates. Additionally, we've implemented system call tracing functionality and performed comprehensive code cleanup by removing temporary implementations.

Hello everyone

Our Gnosis Chain Staking User Experience Survey, which lasted about a month, has ended, and we are happy to share the results with our community after analyzing the feedback we collected.

Key strengths appear to be the low barrier to entry for staking, the project’s alignment with Ethereum, and the broader Gnosis ecosystem. Areas for improvement include documentation, user experience, and tools for managing staking operations.

The interest in Gnosis Pay and other ecosystem projects indicates potential avenues for growth and increased engagement. However, the concerns about competition, particularly from Layer 2 solutions, suggest a need for clear communication about Gnosis Chain’s unique value proposition.

Users Segmentation

We can broadly segment users into:

a) Highly engaged, technically proficient long-term stakers/node operators
b) Newer, less technically confident stakers/node operators
c) Financially motivated stakers
d) Ideologically motivated stakers/node operators (focused on decentralization and security)

Highlighted Numbers

Most respondents (62%) have been staking on Gnosis Chain for over a year, with 38% staking for 2+ years.

The majority (76%) are node operators or solo stakers, with others being liquid stakers or validator service providers.
84% of respondents run nodes at home on their own hardware. Linux is the dominant operating system (86%), and Dappnode is the most popular staking software (76%).

Easy and low are the keywords. The ease of setup was frequently cited as a significant advantage of Gnosis Chain staking. The low entry barrier seems to be a key differentiator for Gnosis Chain, making it accessible to a wider range of participants.

One unexpected result is the relatively high satisfaction among validator who reported technical challenges. This could indicate a resilient and committed validator base.
54% of respondents plan to increase their stake in the next 12 months.
The high level of enthusiasm for Gnosis-incubated projects is a strong positive signal. There’s significant interest in Gnosis 3.0 vision and projects like Gnosis Pay, Gnosis VPN and Circles.

Detailed Key Findings

User Experience and Satisfaction:

There’s a strong positive correlation between staking duration and overall satisfaction.
Stakers who have been staking for longer periods (1-2 years or 2+ years) generally report higher satisfaction levels.
Despite technical challenges, many users report high satisfaction, indicating a resilient and committed user base.

Technical Aspects:

Technical expertise significantly influences hardware/software choices and overall experience.
Users with higher technical proficiency tend to use more diverse hardware solutions and report fewer challenges in the setup process.

Common technical challenges include understanding the staking process, keeping up with updates, and managing hardware/network issues.

Community Engagement:

There’s a strong correlation between community engagement and awareness of key initiatives like Gnosis 3.0.
More engaged community members tend to have a more positive experience and are more likely to participate in other Gnosis ecosystem projects.
Regular participants in community events are more likely to bring in new stakers, driving organic growth.
Discord appears to be the primary hub for community interaction, followed closely by Twitter. This multi-channel approach allows for diverse forms of engagement.

Documentation and Support:

Clear documentation plays a crucial role in user onboarding and ongoing support.
Users who find the documentation comprehensive report an easier setup process. The predominantly positive shift in perception is a strong endorsement of the staking experience.

There’s room for improvement in documentation, particularly for less technically inclined users.
Overall, communication is rated positively, with 75% of respondents rating it 7 or above.
- Scores 9-10: about 35%
- Scores 7-8: about 40%
- Scores 5-6: about 20%
- Scores 1-4: about 5%

Ecosystem Involvement:

Participation in the broader Gnosis ecosystem (e.g., using Gnosis Pay) correlates with higher overall satisfaction. There’s significant interest in participating in the broader Gnosis Chain ecosystem, which is positive for the network’s growth and diversification.
Users with larger stakes tend to be more active in the community and more likely to use additional Gnosis products.

Motivations and Long-term Commitment:

Users citing “Desire to Contribute to Network Security” and “Gnosis’s Vision” as primary motivations are more likely to plan on increasing their stake.

Financial returns are a key motivator, but the high percentage of those motivated by contributing to network security and believing in Gnosis’s vision suggests a committed and ideologically aligned community.
- Potential Financial Returns: about 60%
- Desire to Contribute to Network Security: about 55%
- Gnosis’s Vision: about 50%
- Community and Ecosystem: about 40%
- Other factors: about 15%
Understanding and belief in Gnosis’s vision correlate with higher stake amounts and long-term commitment.

Many stakeholders see Layer 2 solutions as the main competition, likely due to their similar focus on scalability and lower transaction costs. The mention of “no direct competitor” by some suggests a belief in Gnosis Chain’s unique value proposition.

Challenges:

The technical aspects of staking are challenging for many, external factors like internet connectivity and regulatory concerns also play a significant role.
- Understanding the staking process
- Keeping up with updates and changes
- Internet connection and bandwidth issues
- Tax and regulation concerns
- Hardware issues
- UX and Technical Barriers

Decentralization and Security:

Users who view Gnosis as highly decentralized express stronger trust in the network.
Perception of network security correlates with stake amount, with those valuing security more tending to stake higher amounts.

Areas for Improvement:

Onboarding processes for less technical users need enhancement.
Tools for managing multiple validators could be improved.
There’s a desire for better analytics and reporting tools among users.

The survey reveals a committed and generally satisfied user base for Gnosis Chain staking. However, there are clear areas for improvement, particularly in user experience, documentation, and communication. The correlation between technical proficiency and satisfaction suggests that lowering the technical barrier could significantly improve user retention and attraction.

It is great to see such strong interest in our vision and ecosystem projects at Gnosis. It really shows we’ve got a great opportunity to drive network growth by tapping into all this enthusiasm. We’ve been looking closely at the feedback, and we see some key areas where we can make big improvements. We need to make things easier to use, and boost adoption of the network.

The good news is, people already love some things about us - like how easy it is to get started and how well we work with Ethereum. By focusing on those improvements while keeping what’s working, we believe we can hold onto our current validators and bring in lots of new users and developers too.

Vero - a new multi-node validator client for Ethereum and Gnosis Chain

Vero is a multi-node validator client, now released as a fully open-source public good developed by Serenita team. Its codebase consists of just ~2,100 lines of source code, with only 9 direct and 35 total external dependencies.

Vero currently powers thousands of our Holesky testnet and Gnosis Chain validators. After months of testing on local devnets and public testnets, Serenita have reached the point where they want to encourage other operators to try it out, especially if they haven't adopted multi-node setups yet.

Circles Node Campaign with Circles x Dappnode x Gnosis Chain

To enhance network decentralization, we're focusing on expanding node distribution in underrepresented regions, particularly West Africa. Our goal is to increase Gnosis Chain's Nakamoto coefficient by adding nodes in countries like Ghana.

The First Beta Release of Shutterized Gnosis Chain is Now Live!

The Shutter protocol is LIVE on Gnosis Chain mainnet, featuring an encrypted mempool powered by the Shutter Network.

Gnosis Chain has always been committed to base-layer neutrality principles, and integrating Shutter Network’s encryption technology strengthens this commitment. Encryption enhances the credibility of the blockchain by ensuring data and transaction integrity.

In the beginning, validators will have the option to participate as the Nethermind client is still in the early beta phase and is under active development. This version is not recommended for use by most validators at this point, but interested validators should choose to participate at a later stage. Additionally, in the future, the plan is for the integration to transition towards a protocol-level change where there will no longer be an opt-in option.
